Integration into Curriculum
Text Narration of Audio File

As previously stated, the instructional module corresponds with a novel called Freak the Mighty, written by Rodman Philbrick. This novel unit is a component of the Cowden-Herrick 8th grade special educational language arts curriculum. The module will take the place of several written activities that were a part of this unit in previous years.

Using this program during a typical week, students will visit the module and access that week’s online vocabulary list and practice activity. The practice activity will help students to learn and remember the vocabulary words in preparation for the reading. Next, students will read the chapters. During class discussions, teacher and students will discuss themes, vocabulary, and events that occur in the story. After students have completed their reading, they will return to the module to complete the online chapter activities. These activities will help to monitor comprehension and highlight key events and themes within the story. Finally, students will complete the weekly vocabulary test to assess for mastery of vocabulary words.

This particular unit corresponds with 3 main Learning Standards set by the State of Illinois:

1.B – Apply Reading Strategies to Improve Understanding and Fluency

1.C – Comprehend a Broad Range of Reading Materials

2.B – Read and Interpret a Variety of Literary Works

The use of this instructional module will meet two of the National Educational Technology Standards 8th Grade Performance Indicators:

4 – Use content-specific tools, software, and simulations to support learning and research

5 – Apply productivity/multimedia tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, group collaboration, and learning throughout the curriculum.
